A semi-truck hauling fruit caught fire early Sunday morning, leading to an hours-long closure on I-10 in Tempe.
The incident happened just before 1 a.m. in the westbound lanes near Southern Avenue. According to a trooper at the scene, the driver lost control and crashed, igniting both the cab and the trailer loaded with watermelon.
Fortunately, the driver was not injured. Westbound lanes remained closed for several hours and reopened shortly before 11 a.m.
Arizona’s Family crews at the scene reported the truck was leaning on its side, with a large pile of burned fruit scattered across the freeway. Cleanup crews, including a dump truck team, worked to clear the debris.
