A Torrington man fled the scene of a crash and continued to drive dangerously before being arrested Wednesday, according to police. Capt. Brett Johnson stated that the driver, later identified as 38-year-old David Smith, initially sideswiped a vehicle on Prospect Place around 11 a.m. The victim was unharmed, according to Johnson, but Smith had fled the scene, turning down Main Street.
According to Johnson, Smith was seen driving dangerously down Main Street roughly an hour after the initial incident.
According to Johnson, Smith nearly hit other vehicles, and a construction worker reported Smith hitting a road sign on Pulaski Street.
Smith was stopped by authorities near Dale Street shortly afterwards, according to Johnson, and refused to take a field sobriety test.
According to authorities, Smith is accused with operating under the influence and escaping responsibility, with more charges pending in connection with prior crashes in which he was involved.
It was not immediately known whether Smith had been released on bail or when he would appear in court.
