A retired Miami-Dade police lieutenant pleaded guilty to attempted murder and several other offenses on Tuesday in exchange for a seven-year jail sentence.

Evelyn Fernandez, 53, shot her ex-boyfriend, a former Miami police major, in October 2023 on Southwest 282nd Street and 167th Avenue. She struck his vehicle rather than him, even though he was the intended target.

She barricaded herself inside another home before being apprehended by officers from her former employment, the Miami-Dade Police Department.

In addition to the seven-year jail term that includes time served, “followed by 20 years of probation if she leaves the state of Florida,” a prosecutor stated. If she had not accepted the plea offer, she might have faced 20 years to life in prison.
