Driver Critically Injured, Glass Bottles Spill Across Oregon Highway in Biggs Junction Semi Crash

One individual was arrested after two semi-trucks crashed at Biggs Junction on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, around 7:10 p.m., an accident occurred on Highway 97. According to Oregon State Police, the driver of a 2016 Kenworth semi-truck towing a box trailer was traveling northbound on Highway 97 when he collided with a southbound 2018 Kenworth semi-truck pulling two trailers.

The 35-year-old driver of the 2018 Kenworth, from Yacolt, Wash., was critically injured and transported to a Washington hospital by LifeFlight. The second motorist, 42-year-old Leonardo Mendoza Lopez of Merced, Calif., was not hurt, according to OSP.

The 2016 Kenworth was hauling glass bottles that were strewn across the highway following the incident. The highway was closed for many hours as part of the cleanup.

According to the OSP, Mendoza Lopez was detained during the investigation and charged with third-degree assault, careless driving, and endangering another person. His commercial driver’s licence has expired.

Joe Giese, the manager of Dinty’s Motor Inn, captured the incident on the hotel’s surveillance system, along with images and videos of the aftermath.

No other information about the crash investigation has been disclosed at this time.
