Man Charged in Fatal Hit-and-run Near Mathis Bridge After Fleeing Toward Barrier Island

Authorities have identified and charged the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Saturday evening on Route 37 near the Mathis Bridge. Abel B. Mathukutty was taken into custody near the barrier island and booked Sunday at the Ocean County Jail.

Mathukutty faces two serious charges: knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash. Jail records indicate he is being held without bail.

The crash happened near Aqua Blu, a popular waterfront restaurant, and was first reported by Jersey Coast Emergency News. Emergency responders arrived to find one victim deceased. The second vehicle involved, reportedly a gray Infiniti, fled toward the barrier island and Seaside Heights.

Witnesses helped authorities identify the suspect’s vehicle, which was located soon after. Mathukutty was apprehended and taken to Toms River Police Headquarters for processing before being transferred to jail. According to court documents, he has no known aliases or detainers.

He is listed as single with some high school education. No court hearing has been scheduled, and no release date has been set.

The incident caused significant traffic delays on eastbound Route 37, particularly near Fischer Boulevard. As of Sunday, one lane remained closed while the investigation continued.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
