DOTHAN, AL (WDNews) – Alabama Power has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) to support the establishment of Studio 126, a free weekly after-school art program for teenagers 13 to 16.
The initiative, which is scheduled to start this autumn, will offer a secure and welcoming environment for creative inquiry at the museum to young people from all throughout the five-county Wiregrass area. According to WMA officials, the program’s adaptable, student-led structure would enable participants to work on independent projects and try out various art mediums under the supervision of a studio artist and a museum educator.
WMA Executive Director Dana-Marie Lemmer stated, “We think Studio 126 has the potential to fill a significant gap in after-school programming for teens, especially those who may not otherwise have access to enriching, creative experiences due to financial or geographic barriers.” We are able to fulfill our mission of giving teenagers a regular platform for creativity, connection, and personal development thanks to the kind donation from Alabama Power.
The funds will ensure that the program stays free for all participants by paying for supplies, personnel, and studio operations. Through cooperation and peer interaction, Studio 126 will seek to assist teenagers in gaining confidence, problem-solving skills, and other soft skills in addition to developing their artistic abilities.
According to WMA, the program is a continuation of its aim to increase educational opportunities for young people in the Wiregrass and encourage lifelong participation with the arts.
