Wiregrass Museum of Art Expands “Bus on Us” Program to Four Counties

DOTHAN, AL (WDNews) For the 2025–2026 academic year, the Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) is extending its Bus on Us initiative to schools in Henry, Dale, and Geneva counties.

Launched in 2017, the program reimburses schools for bus transportation to the museum, so removing transportation barriers for both teachers and children. In order to guarantee access for children in all five districts, WMA will maintain its collaboration with Houston County Schools and Dothan City Schools.

Through studio workshops and gallery excursions, the program provides students with experiential art education. Grade-level-appropriate lessons emphasize literacy for first graders, STEAM-based projects for fourth graders, and the development of creative visual arts for sixth graders.

As they lead students around the exhibits, museum educators promote creativity, inquiry, and observation. According to Executive Director Dana-Marie Lemmer, the program’s goal is to inspire kids with art and enhance education.

Lemmer stated, “We think that art has the ability to inspire, educate, and transform young minds.” Our goal is to enhance the lives of the future generation and promote creativity through our collaboration with Dothan City Schools.

Through lesson observation, classroom-ready preparations, and activity alignment with Alabama State Standards, the program also helps teachers. All year round, homeschool, private, and public groups can go on field trips.
