WASHINGTON (WDNews) —
President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new travel ban affecting citizens from 19 countries, a revived version of one of his most controversial policies from his first term.
The updated ban, unveiled Wednesday, bars entry for citizens from 12 nations and imposes travel restrictions on seven more. The order is scheduled to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, providing a short window before enforcement begins.
Countries facing a full travel ban include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Restrictions on travelers from seven additional countries have not yet been detailed but are expected to limit certain types of visas.
The announcement comes just days after a deadly terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado. Trump cited the incident as justification for the policy, though officials say the suspect, who is from Egypt, had overstayed a tourist visa — and Egypt is not among the restricted nations.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet released full guidance, but officials note this version of the travel ban is on stronger legal footing. The U.S. Supreme Court previously upheld a similar order during Trump’s first term.
