DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) – As summer heats up, Alabama Public Health is encouraging Wiregrass families to stay active, connected, and healthy with its “Health and Fun in Alabama Summer Checklist.” Created by the Nutrition and Physical Activity Division, the checklist offers more than 100 engaging activities for all ages.
From simple joys like blowing bubbles and drawing with sidewalk chalk to outdoor adventures like hiking, kayaking, and geocaching, the list is designed to make healthy choices both fun and accessible. Families can also try cooking meals together, growing vegetables, or learning a new recipe to add a nutritional boost to their summer routines.
Local residents are encouraged to explore nearby parks, libraries, historical sites, and lakes—all while building healthy habits. The checklist divides activities into fun categories including “Have Fun Where You Are,” “Have a Plant” for nutrition-based ideas, “Have a Ball” for sports lovers, and “Have an Adventure,” which challenges families to try new experiences across the state.
The Alabama Department of Public Health reminds families that many of the activities are free or low-cost and can easily be done from home or within the community.
