Search Continues After Texas Flooding; Alabama Girl Among the Victims

(WDNews) After devastating flash floods over the holiday weekend killed at least 90 people, including 8-year-old Sarah Marsh of Alabama, recovery workers in Texas are still sifting through debris and floodwaters.

In an effort to find the people who are still missing, rescuers plunged into overflowing waterways on Monday and combed through the debris left behind. At least 41 individuals are still missing throughout the state of Texas, and that figure could rise, according to remarks made by Governor Greg Abbott on Sunday.

The fatal flood occurred while Sarah, a student at Cherokee Bend Elementary in Mountain Brook, Alabama, was at Camp Mystic in Kerr County. The camp acknowledged that 27 counselors and campers perished in the calamity.

Alabama U.S. Senator Katie Britt expressed her sorrow in a statement she shared on X:I am utterly devastated by Sarah Marsh’s passing. As they deal with this unfathomable loss, my thoughts and prayers are with her family, her students, and the Mountain Brook community.

Following the incident, concerns over emergency readiness are being voiced. Reviewing whether appropriate warnings were given and the reasons why some summer camps chose not to evacuate or relocate to higher ground, particularly in places that have previously experienced flooding, will be a crucial component of the ongoing response, according to authorities.

Since more rain threatens to overflow already-overloaded rivers and creeks, flash flood watches are in effect throughout central Texas until 7 p.m. today.
