The El Paso Chihuahuas scored four runs in the last four innings to win the series 7–6 on Sunday night at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, after the Round Rock Express failed to hold on despite a three-run lead going into the sixth inning.
With two multi-RBI home runs in the first and third innings, respectively, Trevor Hauver and Alan Trejo put Round Rock ahead 6-2. The Express had trouble cashing in on big hits when El Paso’s bullpen entered the game in the fourth inning.
According to bench coach Chase Lambin, it’s never nice to go off to a huge lead like that and then lose it. We didn’t score again after scoring six runs in the first four innings. Although we had chances, we were unable to get a huge hit with runners in the scoring position.
Richie Martin and Michael Helman both drove in doubles, but both were thwarted since there were already two outs. Round Rock left six players on base in total, all of whom came after the sixth inning.
Then, according to Hauver, they introduced Manuel Castro, who has a terrific cutter and a good curve ball. (El Paso) paid off by keeping us off balance the previous couple.
Carl Edwards Jr., the starting pitcher for the Express, had a difficult night. Even though he pitched into the sixth inning and recorded five strikeouts, Edwards Jr. was unable to keep his composure to finish the game, giving up two home runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull El Paso within one.
Edwards Jr. was replaced on the mound by Aidan Anderson in the midst of the sixth inning, but the Express were unable to stop the Chihuahuas from scoring despite the pitching change. In the sixth inning, Rodolfo Durn tied the score with an RBI single.
Lambin remarked, “They have some good bats.” Some guys will hit you over the fence if you make a mistake.
Robby Ahlstrom arrived after Anderson’s short stint and headed for the hill.
In his two innings of action, Ahlstrom kept El Paso scoreless while successfully holding down the mound for Round Rock. Despite Ahlstrom’s outstanding effort, he was replaced by Joe Barlow in the last inning, which gave El Paso Mason McCoy the opportunity to hit their third and game-winning home run of the evening.
“The home runs and other things are difficult for the guys on defense,” Hauver said. Not just on the pitchers, but also on the position players, as we have a positive relationship with the pitchers and feel for them.
This week, Round Rock will play a six-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes at RGCU Field at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
