American R&B singer Chris Brown, Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend, was detained in the UK on Thursday on suspicion of a serious 2023 attack at a London nightclub, reports said.
Brown, 36, was seized by police at a hotel in Manchester, northwest England, early Thursday morning, according to The Daily Telegraph and The Sun. The Metropolitan Police in London said a 36-year-old man was in custody on suspicion of grievous bodily injury, but did not identify him.
Officers detained the Grammy winner at Manchester’s five-star Lowry Hotel in February 2023 after reportedly attacking music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at Tape nightclub in London’s affluent Mayfair neighborhood, according to The Sun.
On Wednesday afternoon, the actor reportedly arrived at Manchester Airport aboard a private plane.
He is scheduled to conduct a handful of shows in Britain next month.
A Metropolitan Police official told AFP: “A 36-year-old male was arrested at a hotel in Manchester just after 2 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Thursday, May 15, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
“He has been taken into custody, where he remains.” Brown gained prominence at an early age with his deep R&B voice and subsequently rap, but his reputation was tainted by charges of domestic violence and other forms of abuse.
He was convicted of beating Rihanna, his then-girlfriend, before the 2009 Grammy Awards, causing the pop diva to miss the annual event.
