Quinn Ewers, a rookie quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, has been dominating training camp. With his deep-ball rainbows and tight window bullets, he’s drawing attention.
According to head coach Mike McDaniel, Quinn Ewers is doing fantastically. You can tell that he has a certain charisma that appeals to (his) colleagues.
On August 6, the Dolphins declared that Ewers would open the season as the third-string quarterback, behind backup Zach Wilson and sixth-year starter Tua Tagovailoa. The former Longhorn now has an uphill struggle as he attempts to move up the depth chart as the 2025 NFL preseason draws near.
Ewers stated, “I’m playing faster every single day.” It’s awesome to see how much I’ve improved or how much I’ve learned from my failures on a daily basis.
Ewers was preparing for his redshirt junior season at Texas just a year before, hoping to live up to Heisman expectations and a 2025 NFL Draft first-round projection. A campaign filled with highs, lows, and injuries ensued.
Ewers concluded the season with a 65.8% completion rate, 3,472 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His performance was certainly impressive, but it fell short of the resounding declaration Texas supporters had hoped for. Many believed that Arch Manning, a talented backup, would be more qualified to lead the fast-paced attack. Nevertheless, the squad continued to support Ewers until the College Football Playoff Semifinal.
According to NFL analyst Lance Zierlein, Ewers’ arm talent and game flashes are alluring. However, he hasn’t mastered the game to the point where he can play consistently.
He was selected by the Dolphins in the seventh round of the draft in April as a depth addition. Now that training camp is well under way, it appears like Ewers’ decision to preserve his legacy is finally starting to pay dividends.
Videos of Ewers throwing sharply started to circulate during the first few days of camp. He was shown in one video putting the ball into his receiver’s hands on the sideline, just above the cornerback’s outstretched arms. Another showed him passing to the tight end 25 yards downfield after rolling out of the pocket. Ewers soon flooded football fans’ feeds worldwide.
After a day at camp, Tagovailoa remarked, “I think Quinn has been balling.” He’s been believing what he’s been told in the quarterback’s room, I believe.
Ewers’ performance has delighted Dolphins supporters, who have been plagued by mediocrity and a quarterback who has suffered from frequent concussions in previous years. A future in which Ewers is guiding Miami back to prominence doesn’t seem so unbelievable all of a sudden.
There is still a lot of work to be done. Although McDaniel sees value in Ewers, he does not currently see the quarterbacks’ depth chart order shifting.
He claimed that Quinn is the kind of person who works hard every day to turn that into a legitimate competition. That’s not how I see things at the moment. However, I’m extremely honest about being receptive to everything the players tell me by their acts rather than their words.
The former Longhorn has an opportunity to put McDaniel and the rest of the NFL on notice as the Dolphins preseason gets underway this Sunday.
According to Ewers, I experienced a lot throughout my time at Texas, including injuries and other such situations. However, since it shaped who I am now, I doubt I would trade anything.
