OZARK, AL (WDNews) — A 20-year-old woman has been taken into custody in relation to a drive-by shooting that occurred in Ozark last week and resulted in one person being hurt.

Around 7:45 a.m. on July 24, officers from the Dale County Sheriff’s Office and the Ozark Police Department responded to a complaint of gunfire on the 400 block of Dixie Drive. Officers discovered an adult woman with an upper body gunshot wound when they arrived. For treatment, she was taken to a hospital in Birmingham. Her wounds are not thought to be life-threatening.

Three adults and three children, ages four to thirteen, were inside the house when multiple shots were fired, according to investigators. Gunfire also struck an uninhabited car parked in the front yard.

The culprit was identified by the police as Ozark resident Chamiya Ma shae Beaty, 20. Although the woman who was shot was not the intended target, authorities believe the shooting was caused by a prior argument between someone within the house.

Beaty is accused of shooting into an unoccupied car, shooting into an occupied house, and attempting to kill someone.

The next evening, July 25, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of the Florida Highway Patrol, discovered her and took her into custody in Lake City, Florida. According to officials, she was discovered in the same car that was used in the shooting, and a gun that was thought to have been used was also found.

While awaiting extradition to Alabama, Beaty is being detained in the Lake City Jail.

The Florida Highway Patrol, Dale County Sheriff’s Office, and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office were acknowledged by the Ozark Police Department for their assistance in the investigation and arrest.
