PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WDNews)
– City officials have announced temporary nighttime closures for part of Panama City Beach following a recent shooting incident that occurred during a large gathering of young beachgoers.
The closures, which began this week, affect the stretch of beach between access points 25 and 36 along the west end of Thomas Drive. This area is near popular spots like Shores of Panama and Pineapple Willy’s, which authorities say have seen the most disruptive activity.
According to Panama City Beach Deputy Police Chief John Deegins, officers responded to an altercation involving dozens of teenagers who were participating in “Oklahoma drills,” a football-style activity where individuals run at each other and tackle. The confrontation escalated into a fight, ultimately leading to a firearm being discharged.
“It’s ridiculous that we had a shooting,” Deegins said. “There were about 50 kids on the beach when this happened… it ended up in an argument and fight which resulted in somebody firing a gun off.”
No injuries were reported, but the incident prompted swift action.
“The beach will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in that area,” Deegins said. “Public safety is our number one goal. We want to make sure that everybody’s safe, and the past few weeks and months we’ve just seen an increase in unruly behavior.”
Authorities say the temporary closures will remain in place while they monitor the situation and evaluate public safety risks. Beach patrols have also been increased in the area.
Officials are asking for cooperation from the public and reminding visitors that Panama City Beach is a family destination—not a Spring Break party zone.
