Montgomery Man Convicted of Stealing $8.4 Million in Elder Exploitation Scheme

MONTGOMERY, AL (WDNews) — In a massive elder exploitation case involving over $8 million in stolen assets, a Montgomery County jury has found James Jimmy Bulger guilty on all counts.

Bulger was found guilty on Thursday of first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly, first-degree theft by deceit, and aggravated theft by deception, according to Attorney General Steve Marshall.

Bulger, according to the prosecution, used a sophisticated Ponzi-style scheme to target an elderly victim over a two-year period. He persuaded the man to reinvest what were essentially simply parts of his own money but seemed like earnings. According to authorities, Bulger funded an extravagant lifestyle that included a custom 8,000-square-foot house, luxury cars, and designer goods with the $8.4 million that was taken.

Bulger allegedly offered the victim $1 million to withdraw the case after his indictment, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Attorney General Marshall claimed that this was not a case of poor judgment but rather a well-thought-out, predatory plot that defrauded an elderly man who trusted him of about $9 million. His conviction serves as a potent warning that we will not hold manipulators and scammers to account, particularly when they target our older citizens.

Assistant Attorneys General Kyle Beckman, Alana Cammack, and Jasper Roberts from the Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Division handled the case. Marshall also expressed gratitude to Special Agent Robert Stuart and the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board for their contributions to the investigation.
