DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) —

Marine Corps veteran and local parent J.T. Carroll has officially announced his candidacy for the District 5 seat on the Dothan City Schools Board of Education.

Carroll, a husband and father of two young daughters, said his decision comes after thoughtful consideration and a desire to bring steady, student-focused leadership to the school system.

“Our students and teachers are just as capable as anyone in the country—but they need real support and consistent leadership to thrive,” Carroll said in a statement.

He acknowledged the challenges Dothan City Schools have faced in recent years, citing changes that have been both “necessary” and “disruptive.” Carroll said lingering divisions within the community require a reset in leadership that prioritizes stability and unity over social media debates and political conflict.

A former infantry officer, Carroll served in two combat deployments during his time in the U.S. Marine Corps. After his military service, he worked in strategic roles at a major consulting firm before joining a leading organization where he currently manages investment opportunities and financial planning.

Carroll says he will bring a “common-sense approach” to the board and emphasized his focus on student achievement, teacher retention, and responsible budgeting.

“My priorities are simple: help students succeed, keep great teachers in the classroom, and invest where it matters most,” Carroll said.

He urged voters to consider the broader impact of a strong public school system on the entire community, regardless of whether residents have children in the schools.

“Great schools attract businesses and families, strengthen our workforce, and help Dothan grow,” he said.

Carroll will be on the ballot for the Dothan municipal election scheduled for August 5.
