Jim-Jim’s Water-Ice to close after 31 years

After more than 30 years of service in Austin, Jim-Jim’s Water-Ice will close in September.

The establishment used social media to announce the closure in July. Jim-Jim’s Water-Ice owner Jim Moy stated the closure was decided upon following the establishment’s 30th anniversary and his 60th birthday last year. After spending the majority of his life working at the store, Moy stated that he wanted to spend more time with his loved ones.

Moy stated, “I’m a positive person, but I had to accept that I have more miles behind me than in front of me.” I want to utilize my remaining time wisely.

After moving to Austin to attend UT, Lily Jang, a friend of the Moy family and a former Jim-Jim’s employee, began working there. The closure was bittersweet, Jang said, and she was thrilled that Moy brought water ice to Austin.

According to Jang, everyone adores Jim-Jim. His works are very unique. Many families now consider it a tradition.

A staple for Heather Moran is Jim-Jim’s. She began working there after visiting the company as a teenager. Moran stated that her family always goes to Jim-Jim’s when she is in Austin, even though she no longer resides there.

One characteristic that distinguishes Jim-Jim’s from the competition, according to Moy, is his efforts to leave positive memories for the generations of people he serves.

According to Moy, this is the reason they are so upset at the news of Jim-Jim’s closure. the recollections it evokes, whether they be of their early years or of eating Jim-Jims with loved ones. Something we touched is woven into the fabric of their being.
