Governor Ivey Marks One Year of Montgomery Crime Suppression Unit

In honor of the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit’s one-year anniversary, Governor Kay Ivey is spotlighting the unit’s accomplishments in lowering violent crime in the Montgomery region (WDNews).

The outcomes are self-evident. “Thanks to this joint anti-crime effort that was started a year ago, violent crime is on the decline and more criminals are behind bars today in Montgomery,” Governor Ivey said. The allocation of resources to enhanced criminal monitoring and enforcement by the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit has produced favorable outcomes. According to recent reports from the City of Montgomery, total crime has decreased by 19% and violent crime in the Capital City has decreased by 30%. These successful anti-crime initiatives will go on.

The MACS Unit has made 429 arrests, including 30 juveniles, served 983 arrest warrants, and performed 3,100 traffic stops since its inception in 2023. In addition, officers recovered 69 stolen cars, seized 268 illegal firearms, and seized 164 machine gun conversion equipment.

In order to combat violent criminals and maintain the safety of our communities, it makes sense to combine the intelligence collection and crime-fighting capabilities of state, federal, and local authorities. Maintaining public safety is a crucial responsibility of all levels of government. “This legislative session, I was proud to continue funding this successful crime fighting effort, and I am happy to have supported the creation of the MACS Unit,” Ivey said.

She also mentioned how her Safe Alabama legislative package, which supports law enforcement activities throughout the state, was recently passed.

In order to support law enforcement throughout the state in their ongoing efforts to keep our streets safe from dangerous offenders, I am also delighted to have supported the Safe Alabama package of legislation that was signed into law this session. The extension of civil and criminal liability protection for law enforcement is one of its main features. Governor Ivey said, “Alabama proudly supports the blue in our ongoing commitment to protect the public.”
