Governor Kay Ivey is urging students in Alabama to participate in her third annual summer reading challenge, which officially began on the first day of summer (DOTHAN, AL.) (WDNews).
Regardless of whether they are enrolled in public, private, or homeschool programs, all Alabama kids starting grades K–8 for the next academic year are eligible to participate in the challenge, which ends on September 5, 2025.
Governor Ivey stated that even though our students have earned a well-earned summer vacation, learning continues. Since reading is one of the finest methods to keep young minds active, I’m pleased to extend an invitation to Alabama children to participate in my Summer Reading Challenge for the third year in a row. Thousands of our kids have already shared their favorite books with me, and I am forward to hear from even more this summer.
In order to take part, students must submit a letter to Governor Ivey describing their favorite summer book and why, whether they picked it on their own or as part of a required reading list. The student’s name, next grade level, and school must all be included in the letter.

Additionally, Governor Ivey urged Alabama families to think about participating in both the national Summer Reading Challenge and Second Lady Usha Vance’s initiative.
The more we can do to encourage students to read, the better, and I’m honored to support Second Lady Usha Vance in that endeavor. It is my goal that families throughout our state would participate in our Alabama reading challenge as well as the national one spearheaded by our Second Lady. According to Governor Ivey, there is no better way to pass the summer than with a good book—or two, or twelve—in hand.
Students in grades K–8 are asked to read 12 books by September 5 as part of the national reading challenge, and they are required to keep a reading log to document their progress. Students who successfully finish the challenge could get a certificate, a reward, and the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C.
