Montgomery, Alabama. After Chairman David Reed passed away on June 19, 2025, Governor Kay Ivey stated on Thursday that John Young would take over as Chairman of the Marshall County Commission.
According to Governor Ivey, John Young, a Marshall County resident of 50 years, is well-respected for his 30 years of public service. He is a perfect fit to lead the Commission because of his diverse experience, which includes running a software development company, working as the Chief Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office, and being the Assistant Chief Deputy for the Sheriff’s Office. I have faith that he will continue to serve the community with honesty and commitment.
Young, who will take Reed’s place after his death, said he was grateful for the appointment. “Serving out Chairman Reed’s term is an honor,” Young remarked. I will put in a lot of effort to provide professional services to the people of Marshall County, which is a wonderful area to live and raise a family.
He joined the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office after starting his public service career in 1978 as a patrol officer with the Albertville Police Department. Young returned to the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office in 1994 after moving to a managerial position at Sweda International/Innovax Concepts Corporation in 1984. He held several roles over the following 30 years, including Chief Investigator, Investigator, Drug Task Force Commander, and Child Abuse Investigator.
Young received the Guntersville Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 Citizen of the Year award. In addition, he has actively supported crime victim services and served on the founding boards of other local organizations.
Young formally starts his term as Chairman right away. Young and his wife, Karen, live in Langston.
