Four Record Friday delivers album listening parties across the city

Listening to his favorite albums is the ultimate experience for Chris Cates, the inventor of Four Record Friday. Four Record Friday began as an idea for a place where other fans might congregate and enjoy a fantastic record together.

The weekly Four Record Friday event, which used to be hosted at the Mayfair Austin, attracts audiences to hear four vinyl albums from beginning to end. Since the event started approximately three and a half years ago, nearly seven hundred vinyls have been distributed, and each night concludes with a giveaway. Four Record Friday, which celebrates the power of a great album, just announced that they will be moving from their residency at Mayfair to a new location every week. The event is hosted by the well-known Instagram page When Where What.

“It’s like you’re transported when you hear (your favorite album) come on and you play it through,” Cates added. Listening to your favorite albums in their entirety and interacting with those who enjoy them is what Four Record Friday is all about.

Cates claimed that he came up with the concept for Four Record Friday after When Where What became successful. With over 407,000 followers since its launch in 2015, When Where What focuses on showcasing local activities and events.

According to Cates, “I thought (the account) would be an interesting way to tell people what was going on, cut through all the clutter and BS and (get) straight to the point of when, where, and what is happening.”

According to Cates, he started experimenting with organizing his own events as part of When Where What in 2018. Cates stated that his goal in starting Four Record Friday was to honor music while emphasizing contemporary affairs.

According to Cates, we make an effort to always be present. Reading about the ups and downs of culture is rather common.

The event took place at Tiger Lilly, a cocktail lounge in the downtown area, this past Friday. The lineup featured records by Rufus Du Sol, Fred Again, SG Lewis, and Barry Can’t Swim. Instagram requests served as the inspiration for this week’s roster, according to Braden Barrett, who started DJing at the event last year.

“Just ask,” Barrett said, “if you want to hear something and you like what you hear.” People frequently assume that Four Record is not for the city. The pop-up’s whole purpose is to serve the public.

Attendee Kylie Hogg stated that she chose to go because she like physical media and the lineup for the week.

According to Hogg, it’s great that they’re visiting different locations because, since COVID, those who relocated here from school haven’t had as much exposure to the surrounding areas. (The pop-up) provides established local locations with an opportunity to exhibit their work.

Four Record Friday will be held at Granny’s Tacos this week, with albums by Bad Bunny and Karol G. Cates stated that he wants to mix musical genres with unusual settings and hopes to grow the event both in Austin and beyond.

“Everything seems possible,” Cates remarked. We’re taking Four Record Friday to the community by collaborating with venues and performing at unconventional locations. It feels like it’s much more welcoming. The possibilities are endless.
