SAVANNAH, GA. (WDNews) Fort Stewart, a significant U.S. Army station in southeast Georgia, reported that five soldiers were shot during an active shooter scenario on Wednesday.
Parts of the post were immediately placed under lockdown as a result of the incident, and officials advised all staff members in the impacted area to remain indoors and shut all doors and windows. For safety, all of Fort Stewart’s entrance gates were shut down.
Updates on Fort Stewart’s official social media accounts indicated that the shooter was located near the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. The area was promptly secured by emergency response units.
Nearly 1,400 pupils were impacted when three of the base’s elementary schools were put on lockdown. The Liberty County School System stated that three off-base schools in the vicinity also implemented safety measures out of prudence, and Community Superintendent Brian Perry verified the situation.
The 3rd Infantry Division is stationed at Fort Stewart, the largest Army base east of the Mississippi River, some 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, acknowledged that he is in communication with the police investigating the shooting. The region’s representative, U.S. Representative Buddy Carter, stated that he is keeping a careful eye on the issue.
There are currently no additional data available regarding the shooter’s state or the health of the injured soldiers. Investigators are still working.
