Governor Kay Ivey has formally scheduled the execution of death row inmate David Lee Roberts, who was found guilty of Annetra Jones’ 1992 capital murder in Marion County (WDNews).
A letter dated June 26 states that the execution will take place during a 30-hour period starting at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, 2025, and concluding at 6:00 a.m. on Friday, August 22. The order comes after the Alabama Supreme Court recently ruled that the state may carry out the execution.
For the murder of Jones over thirty years ago, Roberts was found guilty of capital murder and given the death penalty.
Governor Ivey wrote to Department of Corrections Commissioner John Hamm, “At this time, I have no plans to grant clemency in this case.” But, in accordance with the State of Alabama Constitution, I maintain the right to give a reprieve or commutation if required at any point prior to the execution.
The official authorization for the execution is the death warrant issued by the Alabama Supreme Court, which was included in the governor’s letter.
Since his conviction, Roberts has been incarcerated at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore on death row.
