Dothan, Ala. (WDNews) As the Southern Conference Champions and USL2 National Final Four Finalists, Dothan United Soccer Club concluded an exciting season with a historic performance that captured the hearts of the Wiregrass. This was only their second season in the league.
Santiago Hoyos, who joined the team this summer, gave an emotional interview in which he reflected on the team’s success.
We wanted to win everything and become national champions, but right now it’s a little bittersweet, Hoyos remarked. However, we must ultimately be modest and acknowledge the tremendous amount of work put in by the players, coaches, owners, staff, and supporters. We’re quite proud.
Hoyos also mentioned that, based on the club’s goals, he would love to return to Dothan next year while completing his master’s degree.
He went on to say, “This team wants to go professional.” Next year, we’ll see where Dothan United stands.
Edu Zurita, the assistant coach, emphasized how remarkable this season was for a club that is so young.
We’re only in our second season of USL2 competition,” Zurit stated. The entire community should be proud of their accomplishment of winning the Southern Conference and being in the top four out of 170 teams globally.
Zurit also discussed the team’s vision and culture: each year, the roster is different, but the goal remains the same: create a culture, support players’ development, and let them realize the effect they can make in Dothan.
A thrilling semifinal loss to Vermont Green, decided by a fifth penalty kick, marked the end of United’s season. However, in the view of their supporters, the team ends the 2025 season as champions, with aspirations to advance even farther in 2026.
