DOTHAN, AL (WDNews) Over the course of the next five years, Dothan intends to address affordable housing and community enhancements, according to a comprehensive roadmap published by the city.
This plan will be open for comments for the whole month of July.
Priorities are established for the use of federal money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the 2025 2029 Consolidated Plan and the 2025 Annual Action Plan. Good housing, a comfortable living environment, and more economic prospects for residents with low to moderate incomes are the three main areas of attention.
Dothan anticipates receiving more than $654,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding over the course of the next year, which will be used to support various community-based initiatives. These include restoring old homes, improving low-income communities’ infrastructure, and supporting nonprofit organizations that assist the homeless and other vulnerable groups.
The 2025 AAP’s main objectives are:
-
Preserve and create affordable housing
-
Assist homeless shelters and service providers
-
Improve public infrastructure like sidewalks and drainage in underserved areas
-
Fund public services for low-income households and youth
-
Promote fair housing education and enforcement
A serious need is also highlighted in the plan: Dothan does not have enough safe, reasonably priced housing units, particularly for elderly people, single-parent households, and people with disabilities. To help residents in need of emergency repairs and house rehabilitation, the city will collaborate with both public and private partners.
Before the proposal is finalized, city officials are asking for public input. Members of the public can attend future public hearings or view and comment on the draft on Dothan’s website.
