For government junior Dalila Ramirez, Dollar Slice Club on Guadalupe Street has long been an enjoyable place for her and her friends to get a quick, affordable bite. She cherished the time when she went on a late-night trip with dozens of “Love Island” fans after a watch party at Victory Lap, a nearby bar.
“I was one of the first people to get there,” Ramirez said. “It was super dead; nobody was there. But everybody that was just at Victory Lap went to Dollar Slice, and it was fun. Everybody was just talking about the finale, the watch party and just had something to eat.”
Her favorite menu item was garlic knots, and she even got the signature membership in February for discounted pizza. But on July 9, she received an email that upset her — Dollar Slice Club would close its doors on Sunday, July 20.
“It was just pretty sad because it was one of the last reliably good and truthfully affordable food options in West Campus and near campus,” Ramirez said. “You can’t tell me anywhere else where you can get an entire large meal, big enough for two, for like $4.”
The restaurant’s Guadalupe Street location will become a new Italian restaurant named Famous Famiglia Pizzeria, with a larger and more varied menu, according to an email from Dollar Slice Club.
“In August of this year, the exciting NYC-based Famous Famiglia Pizzeria will open at the Dollar Slice Club location,” Dollar Slice Club’s ownership wrote in an email. “The restaurant will offer authentic New York pizza, as well as a broader Italian menu, including delicious chicken parmigiana sandwiches, homemade pasta, salad and dessert.”
Sarah Tomasino, the location manager, said the store is not closing, but rather rebranding. Dollar Slice Club and Famous Famiglia Pizzeria both share the same owner, and staff will stay for the new restaurant’s opening in August. However, the new rebranded restaurant will not have a subscription membership.
Famous Famiglia Pizzeria did not respond to a request for comment.
Harrison Boyd, psychology senior and three-year employee at Dollar Slice Club, said that his favorite part of working there has been seeing all the loyal customers who were part of the membership and helped make it a “family.”
“The members — they come in here (and) it’s the same people,” Boyd said. “There’s all sorts of crazy things that happen, but the customers are always there with us. We always feel like they got our back.”
