When it comes to education, it’s critical that students understand the variety of academic opportunities available, particularly for exploring various facets of Latin America. With the 2023 Seal of Excellence, UT provides a variety of ways to integrate Latino studies with multiple disciplines.
The College of Liberal Arts’ Department of Latino and Mexican American Studies
The Department of Mexican-American and Latino Studies in the College of Liberal Arts, which houses the ethnic studies department, allows students to supplement their primary discipline with a specialty in less than 15 hours. The students focus on identity, history, community, and Latin culture, investigating topics like Latinx Legend Tripping, Tejana Cultural Studies, and Policing Latinidad.Syriah Enr Quez, a student studying English and Mexican American studies, expressed in English how excited he is to attend the Latinx Legend Tripping class this October, which focuses on Hispanic American film history, including La Llorona and Chupacabra.
(MALS) invokes these interests, such as reading and interacting with media created by Mexican Americans, but it wants you to be as open and honest as possible about the issues that were faced, as stated by Syriah Enr Quez, a junior in English and Mexican American studies.
Additionally, by fostering his interest in Latin studies, he finds his identity validated as unique and significant, which motivates him to teach Latin literature in the future.
“That wouldn’t be possible if I were reading Jane Austen alone,” Enr quez said. I don’t see myself as a person, but rather as someone who can bring about changes in my community, particularly with what I’m learning, what inspires me, and who inspires me.
Communication College at Moody’s
The only department that offers a lesser level of specialization is MALS.With an 18-hour schedule that may include classes like Screening Race and Reporting Latin America, Moody College also provides a comparable experience in Estudios and Art in Latino Communication Media.Linda Alvarado, who graduated from MALS with a less specialized degree than Moody, stated that her favorite class was Chicana/o Cinema.
Given that the majority of the classes that are taught under Latino studies have teachers who are very supportive of their students and who undoubtedly understand this kind of energy, Alvarado said.
Alvarado stated that it is very important to learn about the history of other democracies because they have a history in the EE.UU., highlighting the significance of being culturally aware of the histories of groups that are not typically heard.
One essential component of Latino American culture, particularly Spanish, is language, and there are opportunities for those who wish to pursue it professionally.
Business School at McCombs
Within McCombs, there is a particular course for international business students. With more than 30 hours of classroom instruction and international experience, they offer the chance to concentrate on the business and language of a Hispanic-speaking nation. There is room to explore a variety of topics, such as Mexican Revoluci and Introduction to Literature & Culture.
Additionally, STEM students focusing on pre-medicine or mental health may receive uncertified degrees in Spain from Hispanic students or principals. For 18 to 24 hours, the focus is on mental health or mental health contexts, based on grammatical principles, in order to engage with Hispanic communities. Many students believe that attending classes outside of their career is a waste of time, said Alvarado. Unfortunately, many students do not have to pass up the opportunity.
Students studying music, architecture, or art history can immerse themselves in Latin culture without complicating their schedules thanks to the Mariachi Laboratory Ensemble, Hispanic Caribbean Ensemble, Mexican Architecture and Urbanism, and Women in Latin American Art.
