LOS ANGELES, Cal.  (WDNews)

– Brian Wilson, the legendary singer, songwriter, and creative force behind the Beach Boys, has died at the age of 82, his family confirmed in a statement released Tuesday.

“We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away,” the statement said. “We are at a loss for words right now.”

Wilson’s health had declined in recent years. Following the death of his wife, Melinda, in January 2024, a Los Angeles judge approved a conservatorship citing Wilson’s diagnosis of a major neurocognitive disorder.

Wilson was the mastermind behind some of pop music’s most iconic tracks, including “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “California Girls,” and “Good Vibrations.” His innovative work on the Beach Boys’ 1966 album

Pet Sounds

is still celebrated today as one of the most influential albums in music history.

Despite his musical genius, Wilson’s career was marked by decades-long battles with mental health issues and substance abuse. Diagnosed with schizoaffective and bipolar disorders, he withdrew from the public eye in the 1970s and fell under the controversial care of psychologist Eugene Landy. Wilson’s family eventually intervened, and a court barred Landy from further contact.

Wilson reunited with the Beach Boys for select appearances, including their 50th anniversary album in 2012. He also pursued a successful solo career, releasing 12 solo albums and touring until 2022.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored by the Kennedy Center in 2007.

Wilson is survived by daughters Carnie and Wendy, five adopted children, and several grandchildren. His wife Melinda, who played a pivotal role in helping him reclaim his independence, passed away last year.
