(WDNews) As part of a $177 million class-action settlement, AT&T customers who were impacted by two significant data breaches in 2024 may be eligible for compensation payments of up to $7,500.
Over 73 million current and past customers’ personal information was compromised in the breaches, which were revealed in March and July of last year. Following lawsuits, a settlement was reached that included $28 million for the July breach and $149 million in cash for the March breach.
Customers affected by the March 2024 breach may be eligible to receive up to $5,000 in settlement documents if they can provide evidence of monetary losses related to the incident. Up to $2,500 may be claimed by those impacted by the July breach. If they produce specific documentation for each loss, customers who are impacted by both may be eligible for up to $7,500.
According to AT&T, qualified customers are receiving notices from Kroll Settlement Administration and have until November 18 to submit claims. Although appeals may cause payments to be delayed, the final approval hearing is set on December 3.
As an alternative, depending on the kind of information revealed, clients can be eligible for tiers of financial payments. Customers whose Social Security numbers were stolen in the March hack, for instance, would be paid more than those whose data was just exposed.
AT&T said it consented to the settlement in order to avoid the expenses and uncertainty of protracted litigation, but it denied any wrongdoing in the breaches.
In a statement, the business stated that it is still dedicated to safeguarding the information of its clients and earning their ongoing confidence.
