MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) —

Governor Kay Ivey has appointed Cynthia Lee Almond as the new president of the Alabama Public Service Commission, filling the vacancy left by Twinkle Cavanaugh, who recently accepted a position within the Trump Administration.

Almond, an attorney and Republican state representative from Tuscaloosa, will assume her new role on Monday, June 16. She plans to officially step down from her seat in the Alabama House of Representatives on Sunday, June 15.

“Cynthia has proven to be an extremely effective public servant and leader,” said Governor Ivey. “While I know the people of Tuscaloosa will miss her representation in the State House, every person across this state will now benefit from her leadership on the Public Service Commission.”

Almond has served in the House since 2021, representing District 63. During her tenure, she worked on legislation involving education, ethics, and economic development. In the Legislature, Almond served on the Ways and Means Education Committee, Judiciary Committee, Rules Committee, and as vice-chair of the Ethics and Campaign Finance Committee. She also chaired the Tuscaloosa County Local Legislative Delegation.

Before her time in the State House, Almond served four terms on the Tuscaloosa City Council, where she was elected president pro tem and chaired the Finance Committee.

Almond is a practicing attorney focusing on estate planning, probate, business law, and real estate. She also owns a title company. She holds degrees from Vanderbilt University, The University of Alabama, and the University of Alabama School of Law.

“I am honored to have been asked by Governor Ivey to fill this important position. It is one I accept with great enthusiasm,” Almond said in a statement. “I will work hard for her and for this great state of Alabama.”

The Public Service Commission oversees the regulation of utilities in the state, including electricity, natural gas, and telecommunications.
