The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is in grief for the unexpected death of active K-9 Matyko, who passed away on Tuesday, August 12, after experiencing a medical emergency while being taken to a Huntsville veterinary hospital (WDNews).
He was seven years old.Matyko joined the ALEA Highway Patrol Division in 2019 and spent his career in the Decatur/Huntsville, Gadsden, and Montgomery districts.
In northern and central Alabama, he played a crucial role in assisting with drug identification, drug interdiction, and cooperative operations with local law enforcement agencies.
According to ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor, Matyko was more than just a well-trained working dog; he was a cherished member of the ALEA family and a trusted companion. In each community he served, he established solid relationships with local law enforcement organizations in addition to helping to make innumerable successful operations possible.
Matyko’s bravery and dedication were unmatched, according to Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety. He also said, “We honor his service and sacrifice, and it is devastating to lose a K-9 partner.”
Matyko’s death occurs a few days after retired ALEA K-9 Pici passed away on August 2 after a fight with bone cancer. A legacy of commitment and service to Alabama is left by both.
