MONTGOMERY, AL (WDNews) – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has given out over $337,000 in state funds to help fund airport infrastructure repairs at 20 public-use airports in the state, including a few in the Wiregrass.
The Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program, of which the awards are a part, helps municipal airports with planning, upkeep, and development needs such land acquisition, facility repairs, and runway upgrades.
According to Frank Farmer, Bureau Chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau, local airports are essential for tying our communities together and bolstering Alabama’s economy. All around the state, this funding supports vital air services, enhances safety, and fortifies infrastructure.
This most recent funding round will aid a number of airports in the Wiregrass area:

Abbeville Municipal Airport: $22,813 was given to rebuild the apron and build taxilanes for T-hangar access.

The construction of a new north general aviation apron at Geneva Municipal Airport has been granted $30,127.

Dothan Regional Airport: $52,292 was given to purchase an ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) vehicle that satisfies Index B standards.

Eufaula Municipal Airport: $26,309 was given for the apron, runway 18/36 sealcoat, and remarking.

$7,895 was given to Ozark Municipal Airport to help build a corporate hangar.

The project will cost more than $2.2 million in total, including federal funding and local matching.
The Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program was established to help airport owners upgrade and maintain aviation infrastructure that is essential for emergency response, tourism, and business. As part of the initiative, ALDOT also offers technical and engineering support.
