Dothan, Ala. — (WDNews) As summer approaches, Alabama residents are bracing for another season of high heat and rising humidity. With average temperatures climbing into the 90s and humidity often hitting 75%, Alabama Power is urging customers to take proactive steps to prepare their homes and lower energy bills.

To help residents manage the heat and their budgets, Alabama Power is offering several energy-saving tips. These include scheduling regular maintenance on appliances—especially HVAC systems—using fans and ventilation systems wisely, and investing in energy-efficient dehumidifiers.

“With the intense heat and humidity of Alabama summers, we want to help our customers stay comfortable while keeping energy costs under control,” an Alabama Power spokesperson said in a statement “By taking simple steps like scheduling HVAC checkups, adjusting thermostats, and using tools like My Power Usage, customers can make a real difference in their summer power bills.”

The utility also recommends setting thermostats as high as comfortably possible and installing smart thermostats to better control usage, especially during peak hours from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Customers looking to track their energy use more closely can sign up for Alabama Power’s free Home Energy Report, or use the My Power Usage tool to set alerts and daily usage goals.

For families needing assistance with energy efficiency upgrades, Alabama Power highlights the Home Forward Grant program through the Alabama Business Charitable Trust. Eligible households can receive up to $5,000 for weatherization and efficiency improvements.
