– The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Century & Heritage Farm and Bicentennial Farm programs, offering families a chance to celebrate their farm’s legacy.

To qualify for the Century Farm program, the farm must:
-
Have been in the same family for 100 or more years
-
Be at least 40 acres
-
Currently be used for agriculture
-
Be owned by the applicant or nominee
The Heritage Farm designation requires that a farm has:
-
Been operated continuously by a family for 100 or more years
-
Significant historical and agricultural features, including at least one structure 40 years or older
-
At least 40 acres of land, owned and operated by the applicant
-
The applicant must live in Alabama
The Bicentennial Farm program recognizes farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for 200 or more years. These farms must also:
-
Be at least 40 acres
-
Have current agricultural activity
-
Be owned by an Alabama resident
“Over 700 farms have been recognized through the Century & Heritage program, while 20 have earned Bicentennial honors,” ADAI officials said. “These farms tell the story of Alabama—generation after generation working the same land, building strong communities, and supporting our agricultural economy.”
Farms that qualify will also have any historical evidence, such as photos, deeds, and land records, preserved in the Alabama state archives.
