According to a system news release, the UT System Board of Regents decided on Wednesday to name John Zerwas as the UT System chancellor.
Zerwas was chosen the only finalist in July after serving as the system’s 14 universities’ interim chancellor since June. According to the press release, he was a member of the Texas House of Representatives for seven terms prior to joining the system. In addition, Zerwas was the chief medical officer of the Memorial Hermann Hospital System and a doctor for almost 40 years.
According to the announcement release, system chairman Kevin Eltife described Dr. Zerwas as a devoted public servant and a demonstrated leader at the highest levels of academic and health management at universities. As we continue to serve our patients and students throughout our wonderful state, he is uniquely qualified to lead the UT System.
Zerwas expressed his gratitude to the Board of Regents for entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing the UT system.
As we collaborate to promote education, research, innovation, and health care throughout Texas, I am proud to be serving as our leadership across all UT campuses, Zerwas stated in the press statement.
