School Cell Phone Ban Rules Clarified for Families

Published On:

DOTHAN, AL (WDNews) Most parents and students in the Wiregrass are still getting used to Alabama’s new cell phone bans in public schools as the new school year begins. Except in certain circumstances, students are no longer permitted to use or carry phones or other wireless devices during the school day due to the FOCUS Act, which went into force with the 2025–2026 academic year.

The new regulation requires that during class hours, students keep their phones out of their pockets and purses and switch them off. Device storage is permitted in cars, backpacks, lockers, and sealed storage pouches. All wireless communication devices, including as iPads, smartwatches, earbuds, and even smart glasses, are prohibited.

A few exceptions exist. If it is specified in a 504 plan, medical health plan, or Individualized Education Plan (IEP), students are still permitted to use their gadgets. Additionally, teachers can let students to utilize smartphones for learning, and phones can be used for verified medical reasons like blood sugar monitoring or in emergency situations.

One crucial point is that students are not prohibited from using their phones on school buses by the FOCUS Act. Unless specific school systems enact more stringent regulations, phone use is allowed while in transit since buses are not part of the school day or classroom environment.

Additionally, schools must provide digital safety instruction, and the Alabama State Department of Education will start monitoring how effectively schools are following the rule. It is advised that parents inquire with their local school about any additional rules that could be in effect.

The new regulation aims to safeguard students’ mental health and reduce distractions in the classroom. School administrators and instructors should find it easier and more consistent to execute the clear statewide policy, according to school authorities.
