Can I tell the truth? I’m a huge Texan. From the time I began my application over four years ago, I can still picture my job in the Texan. I’ve wanted my name to appear in the staff column on the upper left-hand corner of the Texan’s second page since my sophomore year of high school. I want to give it to someone else now that it’s available.
I wasn’t sure if I would fit in when I started out as a general video reporter. It’s not a given that you will be good at anything just because you desire to do it. I was so really anxious when I arrived at my first Wednesday night group. I realize I shouldn’t have been as I walk away.
In many respects, I am incredibly grateful to Joseph Sweeney for taking a chance on me. From my first year at the Texan, you were able to see my talent and hard ethic. After two years, I sincerely appreciate your help. My CMT Awards show companion is something I wouldn’t swap for anything. See you soon at the news market in San Antonio!
To Kevyn and Colton: You are both hilarious peers and incredible videographers. I’m grateful that my summer team had such dependable leaders. I couldn’t believe we had gotten so close when we joined the Texan that spring semester two years ago. A million times over, thank you.
I would also like to thank some of my former teammates, Amaya and Ky, who were the sweetest people I ever met at the Texan and who truly helped me learn how to express tales in a different way. My all-time favorite production team is still Miss Black UT.
I would like to express my gratitude to the several wonderful employees and friends that helped to make my stay so unforgettable: Marisela, Hannah, Joseph, Riya, Sophia, Sofia, Piper, and Sage! In many ways, you all inspired me to keep getting better at what I do and myself.
Thank you, Peter. Despite our few meetings, your remarks about my needs motivated me to improve.
Lastly, I want to thank my parents for their support and understanding. You are the only one who truly understands what this means to me.
It’s difficult for me to put into words all that I’ve learned throughout my time here: South by Southwest, the CMT Music Awards, pageantry, the Central Business District, West Campus life, and everything in between. My amazing time at the Texan will always be a part of any future UT stories I tell.
I can now declare with certainty that I was a member of the Texan. Miranda, a sophomore, you’re welcome. For years, you dreamed of this moment, seeing your name printed and your work out in the world. Every late-night shot, edit, deadline, and meeting was worthwhile.
