Houston Co. Invests $3.25M in Distribution Park Upgrade

Published On:

Dothan, Alabama (WDNews) — On Tuesday, Brandon Shoupe, the chairman of the Houston County Commission, announced a significant infrastructure investment at the Houston County Distribution Park, which is situated between Cottonwood and Madrid, close to State Line Road. More than $3.25 million will go toward extending water and sewer systems to accommodate the region’s anticipated industrial expansion.

The Growing Alabama Tax Credit program in Alabama provides funding for the upgrades. A new sewage line connecting the park to the Cypress Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant will be installed with the majority of the funds. Only 6,000 gallons per day of capacity remain in the current on-site treatment facility, which is significantly less than what is required to draw in and sustain new business.

The Houston County Water Authority and Dothan Utilities have partnered to provide an additional $190,000 for the completion of a water line extension.

This project wouldn t be possible without the strong intergovernmental collaboration we enjoy here in Southeast Alabama, especially with our local State delegation that supported this legislation, said Chairman Shoupe. The Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s Matt Parker and Colton Cureton deserve special recognition as well; their visionary leadership was essential in turning today’s announcement into a reality. Lastly, I would want to express my gratitude to the Dothan City Commission for working with the Houston County Commission to make this a reality.

Through the Growing Alabama Tax Credit program, which enables firms to offset state tax bills by investing in public infrastructure, Houston County extended gratitude to the area businesses that helped with the effort:

Trust & River Bank One million dollars

Bank Regions $500,000

The Great Southern Wood Half a million dollars

$300,000 for Wiregrass Electric Cooperative

Electric Cooperative of South Alabama $300,000.

Troy Bank & Trust $250,000.

Bank MidSouth $207,500

Bank Synovus $100,000

Friend Bank: $100,000

In order to improve Houston County’s infrastructure and increase the area’s attractiveness to potential industrial partners, this project is regarded as essential.
