(WDNews) – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is calling on the NCAA to return titles, records, and awards to female athletes he says were wrongfully denied due to past policies allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports.
In a strongly worded letter to NCAA leadership, Marshall and 25 other state attorneys general argued that past rules “cheated women out of what they rightfully earned” and undermined the intent of Title IX.
“Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports puts girls and young women at a profound disadvantage,” Marshall stated. “Science backs our arguments up: biological males have clear physical advantages, and a majority of Americans agree—this isn’t fair or safe.”
The attorneys general acknowledged recent NCAA changes banning male athletes from competing in female categories but said those updates fail to address past harms. They are urging the NCAA to retroactively reinstate records and recognitions to impacted women athletes.
Their letter also criticized the Biden administration’s support for earlier inclusion policies, stating they “enabled biological men to compete against women” and cost female athletes well-earned victories.
The push echoes ongoing efforts by the Trump administration, which has prioritized Title IX protections. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education sent a similar request to the NCAA, encouraging the group to validate and restore achievements stripped from women under the prior policies.
The letter was co-signed by attorneys general from 26 states, including Florida, Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee.
