— Redevelopment is underway at the historic Houston County Farm Center, marking a new chapter for one of Dothan’s most iconic community landmarks.

The project includes plans to convert the facility’s distinctive dome into a 39,000-square-foot open-air event pavilion and establish a permanent home for the Poplar Head Farmers Market. Local officials say the effort represents more than structural improvements — it’s a long-term investment in agriculture, economic growth and public space.

“This project represents more than construction — it’s a commitment to supporting local farmers, growing our economy, and preserving a beloved community space,” officials stated in a post from the Houston County Commission.

Originally built in the mid-20th century, the Farm Center once served as the region’s primary venue for livestock shows, agricultural fairs and public entertainment. It was also home to the National Peanut Festival for several decades until the event relocated in the late 1990s.

The property’s use declined over the years, and in March 2022, Houston County sold its 84% interest — about 40 acres — to the City of Dothan for $2.2 million. Since then, local leaders have pushed forward with a plan to restore and repurpose the facility.

“This is a great way to preserve the past while providing something useful for our future,” said Houston County Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe in a 2024 commission meeting.

Structural roof work began in early 2025, and is continuing to make strides towards it’s final construction. The addition of a permanent location for the Poplar Head Farmers Market has been widely praised by community members and vendors alike.

The revitalized Houston County Farm Center is expected to serve as a flexible event space for the community. According to county officials, the renovated pavilion will accommodate markets, festivals, and other large-scale gatherings once completed. The project aims to preserve the site’s historical significance while meeting current public needs.
