– The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has officially authorized the marketing of five JUUL e-cigarette products, including the JUUL device and both 3% and 5% nicotine Virginia Tobacco and Menthol-flavored pods.

After a detailed scientific review, the FDA concluded the products meet legal standards set by the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. The decision was based in part on data showing that many adult smokers have successfully switched from traditional cigarettes to these JUUL products.

The FDA emphasized that authorization does not mean these products are safe or “FDA approved.”

“There is no safe tobacco product,” the agency said in an official statement. “Those who do not currently use tobacco products should not start. Youth should never use tobacco products.”

The FDA will closely monitor JUUL’s marketing practices and restrict youth exposure to advertising. If JUUL fails to meet federal requirements, the agency said it will take action.

This authorization brings the total number of FDA-authorized e-cigarette products to 39. These products are the only ones that can currently be legally marketed and sold in the U.S.
