A Camp Mystic counselor and incoming UT student was killed in the July 4 floods, her family confirmed.
Incoming UT student and Houston native Katherine Ferruzzo’s remains were recovered on Friday, her family said. Ferruzzo planned to become a special education teacher and worked with young children as a counselor at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ summer camp along the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, where
27 campers and counselors
died following severe floods across Central Texas on July 4, the camp said in a statement.
As of Friday,
at least 129 people have died
and more than 170 remain missing in the aftermath of the floods, according to
CBS News.
“We are incredibly grateful to all the search and rescue professionals and volunteers who have remained steadfast in their efforts to locate the victims of this tragedy,” Ferruzzo’s family said in
a statement
. “We would especially like to thank the Texas Rangers.”
A recent graduate of
Memorial High School
, 19-year-old Ferruzzo was set to study early childhood education as a freshman in the fall.
The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation will be established to honor Ferruzzo’s “compassion for those with special needs and learning differences,” her family said.
“We would like to thank the Houston and Camp Mystic communities for their unwavering support and for allowing us to mourn this tragedy in private,” the family wrote in the statement. “We are heartbroken for the other families and pray for all who have been affected.”
