DOTHAN, AL (WDNews) — The Dothan City Board of Education voted Tuesday night at its regular meeting to appoint Dr. Garrick Askew as the next superintendent of Dothan City Schools.
Brenda Guilford, a board member from District 1, made the motion to hire Dr. Askew. By a vote of 4 to 2, the board selected Askew as their first choice. The vote of one board member was not noted.
With assistance from the Alabama Association of School Boards, the superintendent search got underway in April. Before reaching a final judgment, the board interviewed two finalists after reducing the 42 candidates to five in early June.
Dr. Askew is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Operations at Georgia’s Clarke County Schools. In the Paulding County (Ga.) School District, he has also held the positions of Executive Director of High Schools and Executive Director of School Operation Support. He also spent 14 years as a principal at different public schools in Georgia.
In 2004, Dr. Askew graduated from the University of Georgia with a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. Additionally, he has a master’s degree in secondary education from Northwestern University. He started working as a science teacher at Inner City Charter Middle School in Ohio in 2000.
The Dothan City Board of Education will shortly provide more details regarding Dr. Askew’s formal start date.
