Express flounder six-run lead, Space Cowboys march back 7-6 in extras

Sports can occasionally serve as a reminder of how harsh and strange life can be. Regardless of how well things are going for you, fate is unforgiving.

Round Rock Express centerfielder Dustin Harris got things started with a solo home run on the first pitch of the evening, leaping out of the gates. With two home runs in consecutive at-bats, the second of which drove in three RBI, Express second baseman Cody Freeman maintained the momentum.

However, the Express lost to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys 7–6 on Thursday night, despite Harris and Freeman’s best efforts.

The Space Cowboys took advantage of favorable circumstances, scoring two runs in the fourth inning on a fielding error by Round Rock first baseman Blaine Crim and forcing extra innings with a clutch home run by lead-off hitter shortstop Jes’ Bastidas.

With momentum on their favor, the Space Cowboys got out the Express at the top of the inning with a double play and swiftly defeated them in the tenth.

Kenedy Corona of Sugar Land ended the game with a walk-off RBI single when he hit a short line drive down the right field foul line at just the proper angle, making it nearly impossible for right fielder Kellen Strahm to make a play.

In front of the biggest home crowd of the year at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, Round Rock let Sugar Land pull off its biggest comeback of the season after falling behind 6-0 in the second inning.

After a strong season in Double-A Corpus Christi, Round Rock was called up to Sugar Land. In his Triple-A debut, he showed no mercy against Space Cowboys starting pitcher Jose Fleury. Fleury gave up three home runs and five hits before being yanked in the second inning.

Due in part to excellent bullpen play in the remaining eight innings, the Space Cowboys were able to overcome the early deficit and stay on course. Round Rock was thoroughly shut down by Sugar Land’s relief arms, who recorded eight strikeouts and limited them to only five hits in the final innings.

The Round Rock pitching staff was cruising through most of the night rather solidly, holding the home team Space Cowboys to seven hits and striking out ten batters, while the Express struggled at the plate in the last eight innings.

Important errors cost the Express the win. As the ball traveled toward the dugout, Crim miscalculated the toss back to starting pitcher Ty Blach on first base, giving the Space Cowboys two simple runs.

Round Rock will finish its six-game series against Sugar Land at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas, to begin the series on the road.
