Movie nights continue to be a popular opportunity to relax with friends and enjoy the season as the summer heat builds. Screenings in Austin go well beyond the conventional theater experience. The Daily Texan has selected five locations that highlight Austin’s artistic side and provide unforgettable summer screenings in picturesque settings close to the UT campus.
The Paramount Theatre
The Paramount Theatre’s Summer Classic Film Series, a mainstay of Austin cinema, has a carefully chosen film schedule that includes everything from Boogie Nights to The Sound of Music on the great stage of a 109-year-old theater. Every viewing is made more glamorous by the space’s red velvet curtains and balconies coated in gold. It’s a nearly 11-minute journey from campus and costs $15 per person.
Lakeside Films at Mozart’s
Every summer, Mozart’s turns its dock into a floating movie theater. As movies light up the lake, attendees watch from boats, kayaks, or paddleboards. The cafe serves drinks and desserts with excellent coastal views for those who would rather be on dry land. With a cinematic twist, the environment blends Austin’s outdoor culture. Moviegoers who want to watch on the deck can get free tickets, and those who are interested can rent watercraft for $20 to $30.
Cinema at the Austin Film Society
In addition to a full bar and refreshments, Austin Film Society provides a small, carefully chosen screening experience. They frequently include panels with directors and crew members outside of screenings. The cost of admission is $13.50 per person, and proceeds support community cinema initiatives that support Austin’s upcoming filmmakers through grants, seminars, and a thriving internship program.
Park Movies
The Austin Parks Foundation hosts a free film series that transforms nearby green areas into makeshift theaters. It is advised that participants bring blankets, refreshments, and bug repellent. Admission is free, and screenings are B.Y.O. everything. Movies are perfect for group gatherings because they are location-specific and appeal to a wide range of viewers. Zilker Hillside, Deep Eddy Pool, and Mueller Lake Park are well-liked locations.
Austin Motel’s Float Movies
This poolside series honors the culturally significant soundtracks of everything from musicals that make people dance to music superstars. The Austin Motel creates a floating cinema lounge out of its vintage pool. Each ticket costs $50, and guests are required to bring their own floaties so they can float in the pool while watching music-driven movies.
