DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) –

The search for the next superintendent of Dothan City Schools is heating up, and five candidates are making their case to lead the district.

Each brings unique experiences and  ideas for the future of education in Dothan.

Dr. Charles Corbitt

With 23 years in education and deep roots in Dothan, Dr. Charles Corbitt believes he’s the right fit for the job. Currently serving as Director of Student Services, Corbitt said he’s already doing the work that closely aligns with the superintendent’s role—handling parent concerns, managing student enrollment, and overseeing discipline policies.

His proposed 180-day plan starts with listening and learning before making any changes.

“They are our customers,” Corbitt said of Dothan’s parents and students. “We need to do all we can to provide them with good quality service.”

Dr. Donnie Chambers

Dr. Donnie Chambers is no stranger to Dothan schools. Having worked across every level, he sees this as a return home.

“I know these children. I know the families,” Chambers said.

He wants to improve academic performance while expanding career tech programs. Chambers also emphasized building strong college pathways by partnering with Troy, Wallace, and other state institutions.

“I’ve done everything in the school system you can imagine,” he said, noting his extensive experience driving buses, coaching sports, and working in nearly every school.

Dr. Veronica Bayles

Dr. Veronica Bayles wants to expand on the progress already made in the district. She was drawn to Dothan’s innovative programs and career tech opportunities.

Her goal is to enhance student readiness for jobs and college. Bayles said she brings a well-rounded background, having worked in roles from Pre-K director to assistant principal, and stressed the importance of a positive school culture.

“Any teacher that feels valued and appreciated will be more likely to come to work and do the work that they need to do,” she said.

Dr. Kari McGann

Currently in New Jersey, Dr. Kari McGann is looking to return to her Southern roots. Born and raised in nearby Pace, Fla., she said Dothan already feels like home.

McGann emphasized a commitment to wraparound services that support the “whole child,” not just academically, but emotionally and physically. She plans to begin with a listening tour and work to close achievement gaps.

“My message to parents is that your child is heard, your child is seen, and your child will be successful,” she said.

Dr. Garrick Askew

Dr. Garrick Askew brings a strong background in turning around underperforming schools. With experience as a high school executive director and assistant superintendent, he’s focused on raising literacy and student achievement system-wide.

Askew said collaboration with staff and community will be key.

“One step at a time, one school at a time, one student at a time,” he said.

His vision includes building trust and ensuring strong leadership at every level.

The Dothan City Board of Education will soon decide who will lead the district into its next chapter.
