KINSEY, Ala. (WDNews) – A Headland man and his wife have now been formally indicted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a Georgia man on U.S. Highway 431 in Kinsey earlier this year.
Phillip Ashley Chavers, 40, and Carin Lee Chavers, 50, were arrested on June 10 following a grand jury indictment. Phillip Chavers is now formally charged with vehicular homicide, while Carin Chavers is charged with conspiracy and leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death.
The case stems from a deadly incident on Friday, February 28, 2025, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck traveling along U.S. 431 North. The victim was identified as Matthew Edward Cook, 33, of Griffin, Ga. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the Chavers’ vehicle was later located at their home in Headland. According to Kinsey Police Chief Jim Mock, Carin Chavers initially claimed she had struck something but didn’t realize it was a person. She later admitted to lying to protect her husband, who she was reportedly on the phone with at the time of the crash.
Phillip Chavers was arrested later that evening. He was taken to Southeast Health for a blood draw, and those results are not available.
In addition to the new vehicular homicide charge, Phillip Chavers was originally arrested on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, resisting arrest, obstructing government operations, and making a false report to law enforcement.
Both Phillip and Carin Chavers were booked into the Houston County Jail following their June 10 indictments. The investigation remains ongoing.
