Why Andrew Benintendi turned down the Red Sox

Despite the serious interest he received from various teams in free agency, Andrew Benintendi ended up accepting a contract with the White socks. The left fielder signed with Chicago for five seasons and $75 million.

According to various sources, Benintendi was wanted by two of his former teams: Yankees and Red Sox. However, neither of them managed to convince him to return to New York and Boston because the White Sox’s offer turned out to be higher than what both organizations proposed.

Recently, the Boston Globe journalist, Alex Speier, announced that the Red Sox was in contact with Benintendi before the 30-year-old patrolman accepted the agreement with the “Windy City” team.

According to the source, the offer that Boston put on the table for its former slugger was far from the $75 million offered by the “Palefooters.”

It should be remembered that Benintendi played for the Red Sox from 2016 to 2020. In that period he won a World Series championship ring. In 2021 he was traded to the Kansas City Royals with two seasons to go before his contract expired and he entered free agency. A year later (2022), the Royals opted to trade him to the Yankees at the deadline but injury prevented him from playing the season finale with the Mules.
