“We talked, we connected, we gave each other a little hug and then we went to lunch at a nearby place and we just talked a little more and we process thingsNot only for emotional closure, but to see where he is now and what happened, ”said Franks, 52.

“I assume the worst when someone has a spinal cord injury, it is a difficult life,” Franks said. “Looks really good now. He had the most positive vibe ever, ”he added.

“It’s still kind of surreal in a way, but I suppose it offers closure,” said Walker, 44. “I just wanted to express my thanks and my gratitude ”, he indicated.

They both remembered that night

Walker, then 18, was leaving a New Years party with his friends around 3:00 a.m. They were trying to hail a taxi when a car with several men stopped. A fight broke out and some men assaulted Walker.

“They grabbed me and threw me to the ground,” Walker said. He gave them what he had, hoping the attackers would leave after the robbery. He jumped up when they left and three shots hit him: one on the thumb, one on the chest and a third on the abdomen.

As he fell to the ground, Walker realized that he was paralyzed. He prayed that someone would come help him And that’s when Franks appeared.

Franks says he heard gunshots. Soon after, he got out of his car and saw that Walker had been shot and I was barely breathing.

As a medical student at the University of Maryland at the time, Franks knew that Walker was in serious trouble. He thought of calling an ambulance, but realized that he could take Walker to the hospital R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, which was located nearby.

“If anyone can take care of this man, they will probably has 10 to 15 minutes to liveIt’s that place, ”Franks said. “So I made the decision to put him in the car and take him to the front door.”
